For future reference:
Parallels Ethernet Adapter only works with Cisco VPN client (on Mac OS X) if shared network is selected. Bridged network didn’t work.

Today in the train I noticed that my GlobeTrotter Express Card didn’t work anymore. :-(. Found hints for the solution here (message 6). That’s what I did:
- Open Network Preferences
- Choose the Globetrotter Modem (with Bars)
- Configuration to default
- Account name, whatever it was (for me it is gprs.swisscom.ch)
- Click Advanced
- On the WWAN tab choose “Other” as Vendor (instead of Apple)
- Leave Model as it is.
- Click ok and connect.
Model on the Advanced Tab shows “Option GlobeTrotter 3G” now!

Finally updated to Leopard. Everything went smooth, but the Dashboard. I had to delete all custom widgets to get over the Dashboard freeze. I reinstalled most of them and until now, everything works fine. Open Task:
- Reinstallation of GIMP (follow links on chiperoni)
- Clean my external disk to free space for TimeMachine

This post pretty much sums up my feeling about switching to a mac (a bit more than a year ago). The only thing which really annoys me is that the horrible delay in porting the JDK to Mac. That I consider nearly an issue for Java Developers. Yet if you look at Java conferences, nearly everybody has a Mac

Deep Sleep for MacBooks

Since I started commuting I was getting aware how much power my MacBookPro still uses when sleeping. If my Mac is fully charged in the morning, I still need to take my power supply along to be able to use my Mac on both ways (I must use a customer computer at work). So today I looked for a possibility to put the Mac into hibernate. A quick googling session brought up in DeepSleep, a freeware Dashboard widget. I installed it, tested it once so far – seems to work ok. Of course the start up takes a little longer than from normal sleep (about 15s) but that is worth the power saving.
What do you use? Any alternatives?

My Express Card slot on my MacBookPro is broken – so I brought it to a Mac Shop to repair. I really like macs, but the guy in the shop needed nearly 30 minutes to print out a copy of the service order on his MacBook Pro. Lucky for them that there weren’t any customers in the shop.
Calender Weeks and Holidays for ICal

Some people only speek in terms of calender weeks, so sometimes it is handy to know them. For ICal I found a calender to subscribe to here. The subscription can be configured for the holidays one is interested in (basically German holidays including the most important for Switzerland and Austria).
Transfer Emails from PC to Mac

EudoraMailboxCleaner (found here) makes it a lot easier to import the emails from Thunderbird (If you were using Outlook, you have to install Thunderbird on your PC first) . Things to remember:
– close Mail before importing
– copy the whole Thunderbird profile to your mac and select the mailboxes to import when running EudoreMailboxCleaner.
– run the rebuild script in the Tools folder of EudoraMailboxCleaner.
